Finally, a chance to meet my "coworkers" - I have been searching for a board like this for SO long! I completely agree that our inability to communicate with each other tips the power balance way too far in AJE's favor. I hope that more of us will find this board and begin to share tips and stories.
I've been doing contract editing for AJE for several years now and have worked on several hundred papers (I'm being intentionally vague here for anonymity). I've been with AJE long enough to have survived quite a few shifts in the business. My favorite was the Great Editor Shortage of late 2015 to early 2016, when AJE was so desperate for editors that they were paying double-plus the usual rates. My least favorite was the slow phase-out of the higher pay for shorter deadlines compensation structure (which seemed to accompany a huge push to hire tons of extra editors following the aforementioned Great Editor Shortage).
I have conflicted feelings about AJE: I resent their greedy business practices but have made (and continue to make) decent money editing for them (about $30-40/hour on average). I'll add more thoughts on the other threads later when I have the time.
Thank you for starting this board!!!

Hello undercovereditor, it's great to have you on board! Very good insight as well. The more people we have and the larger our community grows, the more helpful insight like this we'll be able to share with each other!

Hello undercovereditor, If you don't mind sharing, how much do you get paid for the assignments for the word slabs and are you able to sustain the $30-$40/hour for 40 hours/week all round the year ?

I can't answer for the OP, but for me, most of my assignments fall in the $30-60 range, closer to the middle of that. And so far my global average since I started is up to $58 per hour, but I work faster than most people. Also, the volume is low, so even though its a great hourly, its not many hours.
